Part of my studies include being able to work with students on their projects by providing feedback and being a sounding board for them to bounce ideas off. Here’s my comments on some of the projects my peers are working on at the moment.
Frank and the Moriboys.
Fank is setting out to work with the Australian Hip Hop industry to expand their merch and digital presence. You can read and watch his pitch on his website.
I really liked reading this pitch because of the fresh nature of the project. I can however see that Frank’s blog is heavily tailored to the BCM (Bachelor of Communications and Media) community is his language and formal structure.
That being said his concept was super clear to me and hit all the points. His target audience was crystal clear and likewise his utility for both consumers and producers.
Frank’s methodology was where I felt he needed a bit of clarification. I wasn’t sure if he was focusing on the physical merch or the digital space to advertise that merch. Either way I didn’t see how he was going to use platforms like Spotify to promote it. Although his collection of Australian Hip Hop is really nice, it doesn’t pull focus to his main project.
I would recommend narrowing his goal even further to allow focus and not confuse his audience.
Frank also drops a lot of lingo in his blog without unpacking it. As a BCM student I almost read these without flinching. Acronyms like FIST and FEFO refer to the methodology of his approach but are sprinkled in the post without actually adding much to the content. I understand the desire to hit the right keywords, but as Frank has proven with the Moriboys, our projects are bigger than a semester at Uni.
I would recommend trying to not use these acronyms and instead address each point individually. Not only will it help readers, but it will also help him to think through his approach with each element and iterate more thoroughly. Alternatively, using the long form of these acronyms to keep readers from skimming over them.
Franks video was clear and effective in its simplicity. It felt true to the style he is working with and hit all the expected points.
Julia and The Tin Knees
Julia is continuing to promote the Sydney/Wollongong based indie pop band; The Tin Knees. You can read and watch her pitch on her website.
I really liked Julia’s focus on working with the persona of The Tin Knees. This sounds like a promising way to continue to keep their audience engaged whilst waiting on band content. Her story about her connection to the band and their problem that she is addressing is clear and explains the concept with an obvious “three fold” utility.
The most interesting aspect was her analysis of the bands instagram success previously in relation to the algorithm. In particular, she highlights the creation of content focusing around the persona’s of the band members. She also notes that users also engage with “short comedic sketches” promoting gigs.
Although this is not an area of expertise for me, I would suggest looking into creating a Twitter account for The Tin Knees. Twitter is a great platform for real time updates and has a fan presence for just about everything. Twitter is an easy platform to iterate quickly on, as its culture is one of spontaneity and living in the moment.
One concern I have for Julia’s project is the spread across so many sites. Managing a social media presence for someone is difficult. Managing that presence across multiple platforms, whilst trying to tailor content to each and engage with each unique culture gets exponentially more difficult with each platform.
My suggestion, would be to focus on narrowing the band’s scope, while deepening the quality and quantity of content. In other words, create more for less platforms. This will help them to tailor to one platform’s niche and create a more constant stream of content.
Julia’s pitch is clearly relevant and well designed. Her video had great footage that helped get a feel for the bands unique style and her blog was thorough.
Great work Frank and Julia. I look forward to seeing your developments over the next few weeks!
