Copyright is the enemy of the internet.
Copyright is the automatic legal ownership of any and all content created by an individual or group. This sounds great! Legal protection from would-be intellectual thieves! Why would anyone disagree?!
Copyright’s attack on peoples ability to copy is an attack on our very nature. Humans are copiers. We copy everything from art to architecture, phrases to languages, and choices to lifestyles. Without copying there would be no language, unstable buildings, and inability to go anywhere or do anything! Copying keeps us alive.
So what is copyleft? Copyleft is an alternative designed to allow a degree of copying. Instead of suppressing our nature it helps it flourish. In doing so it helps creators give the best possible product to users. It is the essence of the internet.
In my “No More Mass, Much More Many” blog, I touched on this awesome concept. The ability to help each other create, building on each other’s work.
Sadly, not everyone agrees. Copyleft, although it is the most beneficial and useful option, is not understood. Passive audiences who don’t care for taking the time to understand may never grasp the importance and humanity of copyleft.

You have to think of all the great content that could be made if those making it never had to worry about copyright. I can also definitely see the other side though, why would you want someone else to benefit financially, and get credit for something you originally made. Its a fine line, and I don’t really see a great alternative for keeping creators content safe. Great meme, very smart!
